Mercian Cycles is a custom bike manufacturer based in Derby, England. Founded in 1946 by Tom Crowther and Lou Barke and unsurprisingly named after the kingdom of Mercia, roughly translating to "Border People" or "Boundary Folk".
The frames built out of their little Derby shop would later become renowned for quality, especially the paintwork.
They mastered the art of painting a frame, using a hand-performed 4 week process.
Mercian paint lasts.
But it isn't just the paint... Mercian was ridden by champions.
One of the great women's cyclists, Beryl Burton, known for winning over 90 domestic championships, seven world titles, as well as setting the women's 12 hour time-trial. Berton was an avid Mercian rider who held the 12 hour record for both women and men for 2 straight years!
Another example is Eileen Sheridan who broke all the records of the Women’s Road Records Association during the late 1940s and 1950s.
'King of Mercia' frames are one of the most popular Mercian frames, with hand-cut heart-shaped lugs that came as standard. This frame comes with a blue and white paint job with hand painted lug-lining.
Riding a vintage Mercian is riding your very own piece of British cycling history.
